The "Everything Shower" Ritual
The Everything Shower
Prepare • Cleanse • Renew
Some showers are a quick beginning to the day. Others deserve a little more time.
The Everything Shower is an unhurried ritual of care, bringing together the small things we often rush: brushing, washing, conditioning, exfoliating, shaving and moisturizing. From the first brushstroke to the final layer of body butter, it is an invitation to give yourself your full attention.
Set aside an hour, gather what you need and let the bathroom become a space to settle into.
Every step is optional. Choose what feels good for your body, your hair and the time you have.
Before the water
1. Prepare your space
Begin with a little clearing. Put away the clutter around the sink, make room for your products and lay out a clean towel, a washcloth and a robe.
Gather your shampoo, conditioner or hair mask, body cleanser, exfoliating mitt or scrub, shaving cream and razor. Leave your body lotion or butter within easy reach for afterward.
Soften the lighting and choose something to listen to—a quiet playlist, a favourite album or simply the sound of running water.
For a woodland atmosphere, a Sauna candle brings a little of the forest indoors. For something softer, choose Sweet Dreams. Place your candle safely away from towels and anything that could catch the flame.
2. Begin with your hair
Before getting your hair wet, gently work through any tangles, starting at the ends and moving upward. Use your fingers, a wide-tooth comb or a brush suited to your hair.
If your hair enjoys a pre-shampoo treatment, apply your usual hair oil or treatment according to its directions. Concentrate on the areas that need it, and loosely clip your hair out of the way.
This is an optional extra, rather than something every hair type needs.
3. Dry brush, if you enjoy it
On dry skin, use a soft body brush with light, slow strokes. Begin at your feet and work upward along your legs, then brush your hands and arms toward your shoulders.
Keep the pressure gentle, using a lighter touch around your torso. A few minutes is enough; your skin should feel comfortable throughout.
Avoid your face, broken or irritated skin and any sensitive areas. If you plan to exfoliate in the shower, you can leave this step out—one gentle exfoliation step is plenty.
4. Take a moment to arrive
Before stepping in, pause.
Release your shoulders. Unclench your jaw. Take a few easy breaths and notice the shift from getting things done to caring for yourself.
There is no need to rush ahead to the next step.
Under the water
5. Warm through
Step into comfortably warm water and let it run over your body. Give yourself a moment before reaching for a product.
Wet your hair thoroughly, lifting sections so the water reaches your scalp and the layers underneath. Let your skin and hair soften in the warmth.
For a forest-scented shower, use Nordic Steam shower spray as directed on its label, keeping it away from your face and the shower floor.
6. Cleanse your scalp
Apply shampoo and work it over your scalp with the pads of your fingers. Move slowly around your hairline, behind your ears and across the back of your head.
Use gentle pressure rather than scratching with your nails. Let the lather rinse through the lengths of your hair.
Rinse thoroughly. If your hair needs a second wash because of oil or product buildup, repeat with a smaller amount of shampoo.
7. Condition and clip up
Squeeze excess water from your hair before applying conditioner or a hair mask. Follow the product’s directions, concentrating on the mid-lengths and ends unless it is designed for the scalp.
Gently detangle if this suits your hair, then loosely clip it up while the treatment works.
Keep track of the recommended treatment time. You can rinse it out before the next steps if it is ready sooner.
8. Cleanse your body
Choose a cleanser that suits the mood of your ritual.
A Halcyon soap worked into a soft washcloth offers a simple, familiar lather. Boreal complements a woodland shower, while Lavender London Fog brings a softer evening feel.
Wash slowly, giving attention to the places a hurried shower can miss: behind your ears, the back of your neck, your feet and between your toes.
Use a separate gentle facial cleanser for your face, and keep scented body products away from intimate areas.
9. Polish gently
If you skipped dry brushing, this is the moment for gentle exfoliation.
Choose either a scrub or an exfoliating cloth or mitt. Work lightly over your arms, legs and body, paying a little extra attention to elbows, knees and heels without scrubbing hard.
A Hammam exfoliating mitt brings a tactile element to the ritual, while a small amount of Tidal Pool Salt Scrub offers a saltwater-inspired polish.
Rinse well and notice how your skin feels. You do not need to chase a perfectly smooth finish.
If you are shaving, consider leaving exfoliation off those areas today, particularly if your skin is easily irritated. Keep oily scrubs away from the soles of your feet and rinse any residue from the shower floor.
10. Shave, if you choose
After a few minutes in warm water, apply a shaving cream or gel that gives your razor a comfortable glide.
Use a clean, sharp razor and gentle strokes, rinsing the blade frequently. Begin in the direction of hair growth, and avoid repeatedly passing over the same area.
Take your time around ankles, knees and other awkward curves. There is no need to shave every area—or to include shaving at all.
Rinse away the remaining shaving product when you are finished.
11. Rinse your hair thoroughly
Let your hair down and rinse out your conditioner or mask, following its directions.
Lift sections so water can reach the roots and the hair at the nape of your neck. Use your fingers to check that you have rinsed evenly.
Once your hair is finished, give your back and shoulders a final gentle wash to remove any conditioner left on your skin.
12. Finish with your face
Cleanse your face with your usual gentle cleanser, using your fingertips and comfortably lukewarm water.
This can be a simple step. Your face does not need the same scrub, brush or exfoliating mitt you used on your body.
Rinse, then spend a final quiet moment under the water. Let your arms rest at your sides and take a few easy breaths before turning off the shower.
After the water
13. Dry gently
Step onto a secure bathmat and wrap yourself in a clean towel.
Pat your skin dry, leaving it slightly damp for moisturizer. Gently squeeze water from your hair with a soft towel or cotton T-shirt, avoiding vigorous rubbing.
There is no need to hurry into getting dressed.
14. Moisturize from shoulders to toes
Smooth on your body lotion or butter while your skin is still slightly damp.
Work slowly over your arms, legs and torso, giving a little extra attention to elbows, knees and heels.
For a light finishing layer, choose a Halcyon body lotion. For a richer finish, warm a small amount of Onsen Rice Bran Body Butter between your palms and massage it over your skin.
On freshly shaved or sensitive areas, choose a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer if scented products tend to sting.
Let everything settle for a moment before slipping into your robe.
15. Finish your hair and skincare
Apply your usual leave-in conditioner, detangler or styling product as needed. If you are using heat to dry or style your hair, apply heat protectant according to its directions.
Follow with your familiar facial skincare. A gentle cleanse and moisturizer may be all you want after a warm shower.
Brush your hair into place, or leave it loosely wrapped while you finish the ritual.
16. Care for the small details
Now is a good time for the little finishing touches: hand cream, cuticle oil, lip balm or a little extra moisturizer on your feet.
Slip into clean socks if you like, then put on a soft robe or comfortable clothes.
A Halcyon Turkish robe makes this part feel like an extension of the ritual—a few more minutes of warmth before returning to the day.
17. Sip and settle
Pour yourself a glass of water or make a cup of tea.
Sit somewhere comfortable and allow a few minutes without immediately picking up another task. Notice the clean towel, the softness of your robe and the feeling of having given yourself time.
If this is an evening ritual, prepare your bed and use Nite Cap pillow spray according to its directions. Lower the lights and let the slower pace continue.
Make it your own
The full ritual is there for the days when you want it. On other days, choose just a few steps: a thorough hair wash, a gentle body cleanse and a generous layer of moisturizer.
Let your Everything Shower change with the season, your mood and what your body needs.
Clean hair. Soft skin. A little time returned to yourself.
